Gastritis is an inflammation of the stomach that occurs when white blood cells move into the wall of the stomach due to an injury to the stomach. This does not necessarily mean that a stomach ulcer or stomach cancer is present.

Gastritis can occur suddenly or develop gradually. Someone with gastritis may sometimes not have any symptoms. Avoiding long-term use of irritants like aspirin, anti-inflammatory drugs and alcohol helps prevent gastritis.
