Calcium

Calcium is a mineral that plays an important role in the development and maintenance of the bones and teeth. About 99% of the body’s calcium is stored in the bone tissue. It is a necessity for the normal functioning of the heart, reproductive system and muscles. It is one of the most important and most abundant minerals in the human body.

Calcium in the bloodstream plays an important role in blood clotting, transmission of nerve impulses, muscle contraction, combating hernia, metabolic activities, building immunity and balancing phosphate.

Whenever there is calcium deficiency in the bones, an abnormal bone cell metabolism arises and this can cause osteoporosis (softening of bones) and poor development of bones. More than 150 diseases and ailments can be traced back to calcium deficiency.

Calcium can be derived from some vegetables and dairy products. Only about 10% - 30% of the calcium in food is absorbed into the body. Absorption occurs through the small intestine. The fizz in fizzy drinks inhibits the absorption of calcium and takes calcium out of the bones.
